Alan Richards

The Register has learned that former Register member Alan Richards, cyclist and record holder of the trike 25 and 50 distances, also the owner of the Birmingham Cycle Shop Tower Cycles has died in a fire at his home in France. This was reported in a local newspaper (Birmingham).

Alan also shared a strong interest in MG cars and in the 60's before he took over the Cycle shop from his dad he had a J4 racing MG (followed by an ice blue and cream Healey 3000). In recent years he preferred the larger pre-war MG saloons and tourers and until recently owned a VA Tickford.

Many Register members will remember Alan as about 3 years ago he organised a very successful SVW Register Weekend in Normandy, France. He was reported to be 72.

The Chairman is appealing for new committee members.

We meet only a couple of times a year, very informally, usually on a Saturday or Sunday morning, and apart from SVW business we have a good old natter, usually followed by a visit to a local hostelry for a quick lunch (and more natter). If you own a SVW car why not join us. Please contact John Dutton.

    David Washbourne 1933-2013

Our President, David Washbourne, died on Monday 7 October 2013, after collapsing at home.

A service of thanksgiving for David's life was held on 23 October 2013 at St Martin's Church, East Horsley, after a private family cremation . It was attended by a huge number of friends, relatives and acquaintances, and the MG Car Club was represented by the General Manager Julian White and the President John Day as well as many others. Several SVW cars came, as well as MG's from David's local natter. It was a fitting farewell.

  • WARNING!!!

Warning and advice to all owners of MGs type VA. Please share this info.

Please have a look at your accelerator stop as fitted to all VAs. It is supposed to look like Photo 1. In practice it has been known to bend down as in Photo 2. If ignored it may bend further with the risk that the pedal rod pops under the stop bracket and actually blocks the throttle in the fully open position, racing the engine out of control as in Photo 3. If bent, straighten it to the original shape and weld a strengthening triangle underneath bracket.
